At Christmas time in 2004, my friends and I decided to take a much-deserved personal retreat to Thailand. We had a burning desire to check out the eastern hemisphere and Asian culture. We were astounded and inspired by the millions of people, resourceful in their hard work, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
A portion of that trip was dedicated to exploring the rich coconut groves of the Thai countryside. I have always used coconut products – both as food and as a health remedy – and I wanted to explore opportunities to bring these exceptional products to Canada. So, we travelled to the hills of Thailand, to increase our knowledge of the benefits of coconut oil right from the source.
We experienced coconuts in the purest and most natural form. And the oil, expelled by hand, cold, and without machines, was unbelievable! We were astounded by the fragrance, the taste, and the sensation in and on our bodies! We had never experienced anything like it, and I immediately began to research the best way to bring this incredible oil to Canada.
Tragically, the tsunami of 2004 affected many of the lives of families and individuals in Thailand, and we feared our wonderful opportunity might be lost. We never imagined we would experience such devastation while on our journey. But I am happy to report that the family run coconut grove survived and is thriving.
